Microsoft Team Foundation Server Branching Guidance
By Rick Mokros on 3/21/2007 2:48:00 PM

Jeff Beehler, thanks for pointing us to this.

Finally, some documented Branching Guidance with Team Foundation Server from Microsoft .  This includes a section on how Microsoft is using branching using "Feature Crews".

Doug Neumann is a program manager on Visual Studio Team System's Source Code control system, and I found the video Branching 101 with him very useful.  However, watch him squirm in his chair when asked about when should a client consider branching, or what is the right branching mod ...

Using Resource Files to store Setup data for your Test Harness
By Rick Mokros on 3/21/2007 8:19:00 AM

If you are like me and are hooked on Test-Driven Development and Design.   You go to great lengths to test your work even when testing goes against the grain.  While writing tests, I have encountered multiple instances where my test needed to setup data in a particular fashion, so the test could validate both success and failure situations.  In this instance, the test was validating data and formatting in an excel spreadsheet.  The easiest way to includ ...

Team Foundation Server Tools
By Rick Mokros on 3/9/2007 10:56:00 PM

If not already, the following tools should be part of every Team Foundation Server (TFS) admin's toolbox.

Team Foundation Server Administration Tool - Although verion 1.2 stills has some bugs that require the application to be restarted, I rely on this tool heaviliy for administering which users have access to which team projects.  This tool provides a single user interface for managing permissions on Team Foundation Server (TFS), SQL Server Reporting Services, and Sharepoint Services.  I highly recommend this tool; just use it with a little patience.

How to choose a baby's name...
By Rick Mokros on 1/16/2007 11:59:00 PM

When naming our child, my wife and I came up with the following requirements.

  • name should be fairly unique according to the Social Security Administration
  • name can not be shortened into a nickname.  This avoid scenarios where later in life where financial and government agencies require the full name.
  • common algorithms for generating a network login name should be reviewed so a username is not of a vulgar nature
    • Some examples for John Doe (jdoe, doejo, etc)
  • Middle name should ...
